Wim Raven is the author of Sirā (prophetic biography) and Qur’an published in Quran Encyclopedia in London. In this article, he, firstly, explains the literal and idiomatic meaning of the word; and then introduces the most ancient sources of Sirā (prophrtic biography). Following this, he points out some of the hadith narrators’ names such as WahabIbnManbah,  OrveIbnZabir, MusāIbnAghabe, Zahari, and… who are the most famous narrators regarding Sirā (prophetic biography); and talks over the chapters relating to Sirāin the hadith collections. Afterwards, Raven explains about the role of Sirā in Qur’an commentary under some titles such as the explanation of rare and vague vocabularies, determining the ambiguities, stating the reason of revelation of Qur’an. Some of the other issues which are discussed in this article include the study of different types of Sirā texts such as the stories of the prophets,the function of poetry, lecture, genealogy, and…. Consequently, the writer talks about the position of Sirā (prophetic biography) texts in historical studies of orientalists. This paper is in fact the translation of the mentioned article.
