دربارۀ زبان مانی

It is widely accepted among researchers that the original language of Manichaean writings was the Aramaic language. However, scholars have refined their understanding over time. Two pivotal articles, translated in this essay, mark a turning point in the history of Manichaean studies regarding this issue. The language of Mani is considered a dialect of the Aramaic language, and Manichaeans translated his writings from this dialect into other languages. However, it is important to note that this dialect was not the language of the city of Edessa.

اینکه زبان اصلی نوشته ­های مانی زبانِ ارمانی (آرامی) بوده امروز در نزد محققان امری مسلّم است، ولی این را محققان به مرور دریافته اند. نقطۀ عطف در تاریخ مطالعات مانوی در این موضوع دو مقاله­ ای است که ترجمۀ آنها در این گفتار آمده است. زبان مانی گویشی از گویش­ های زبان ارمانی بوده و مانویان نوشته­ های او را از این گویش به زبان ­های دیگر ترجمه کرده بوده ­اند. ولی آن گویش گویش شهر رُها (Edessa) نبوده است.
